Documents for this route
Italian deregistration for export
Since 2020 a car registered in Italy must be deregistered for export (cessazione dalla circolazione per esportazione) before it leaves the country. The owner requests it at an STA counter (Sportello Telematico dell'Automobilista) and gets a Documento Unico marked as no longer valid for circulation. The car's periodic inspection (revisione) must be valid, and the owner hands in the Italian plates. Ask the seller to do it and to hand you that document with the car.

Register it at a traffic police (KAT) office. Bring the Italian Documento Unico you received from the seller, the purchase contract or invoice, your ID and Bulgarian third-party liability insurance (grazhdanska otgovornost). The office also inspects the car itself.
Official source: mvr.bgVAT on a new car
For VAT, a car counts as new if it has done no more than 6,000 km or was delivered within 6 months of its first registration. VAT on a new car is paid in the country where it is registered, so a new car bought abroad and registered in Bulgaria pays Bulgarian VAT.

Questions about this route
Does the car need Italian temporary plates?
No. The car travels on our transporter as cargo, so it needs no plates, temporary plates (targhe provvisorie) or road insurance for the journey.
Who deregisters the car in Italy?
The registered owner, usually the seller, before the car leaves Italy. Agree it when you buy the car, and ask for the deregistered Documento Unico at pickup.
Can you collect from a dealer or auction in Italy?
Yes. We collect from dealers, private sellers and auction compounds. For an auction car, send us the release code or PIN before pickup.
Do I have to travel to Italy for the pickup?
No. Whoever hands over the car, its keys and documents can do it: the seller, the dealer or the auction compound.
When do I pay?
Private buyers pay on delivery in Bulgaria, when the car is in front of them. Businesses pay by invoice after delivery.
Is the car insured on the way?
Yes. Our CMR liability insurance is included at no extra cost. Compensation follows the CMR limit, in most European courts 8.33 SDR per kilogram of the car's weight, about €15,100 for a 1,500 kg car. If your car is worth more, consider insuring it yourself for the journey.
Can you transport a car that doesn't run?
Yes. We load non-running and damaged cars by winch. Tell us in the form and we include it in your price.
